Are you creative? Are all humans creative?

If I asked you right now what it means to be creative, what would you say? I’ve noticed that a lot of people, even “creatives,” have a hard time giving a concrete definition of creativity, so let’s talk about it & finally get some answers.
The root
To create means to bring something into existence, to bring something new into fruition, to make something. That said, the definition of creativity is actually really simple: the ability to bring something into existence. To make something. As we just established.
Wow, easy, right? So, then, why is it so hard for people to explain?
Well, creativity is abstract and looks different for everyone, so societally, we have a hard time grasping it.
Traditionally, we’ve been taught that creativity means you’re an artistic genius like Van Gogh or Beethoven, but really creativity is universal. Anyone can make something, right? Because, after all, that’s all it is.
Writing a blog post? Creative.
Making an IG reel? Creative.
Creating a spreadsheet for your bookkeeping clients? Creative.
Cooking a dish based on whatever’s in your kitchen? Creative.
Using ramen noodles to repair stuff? Creative.
I think you get the jist. Anything that involves making something or doing something new/out-of-the-box/different is, by definition, creative.
Contrary to popular belief, creativity is not an elusive genius muse that only belongs to world renowned artists. You don’t have to be a traditional artist to proudly proclaim yourself as a creative person. ALL humans are creative, including you.
The moment you accept that creativity is NOT the same as artistic expression is the moment your creative imposters syndrome disappears.
So, what are the key forms of creativity?
Solving Problems
As an entrepreneur, your whole job is to solve problems. That itself is creative, but to take it a step further, try providing an “outside the box” solution. This is what I call innovation. (More on that next week.)
Making connections
This is my favorite creative technique, and the one that’s been most profitable for my offer creation and even content marketing strategy. Finding connections between two unlike things is creativity at its finest, like my “Super Bowl but make it branding” Instagram post. It’s looking for the hidden threads, going for the surprise, not doing what’s obvious.
Generating ideas
This one might sound like a no-brainer, but if you think about how many ideas you come up with in a day, you’ll realize just how creative you really are!
Trying new approaches
This one is my favorite, too…can you have two favorites? IDK, but anyways, if you’ve been in my community for a while, you know I’m all about a new approach. My motto in entrepreneurship is, “You don’t have to know if something will ‘work’ before you commit to trying it. You don’t have to see someone do something successfully in order for it to be worth pursuing.” New approaches are just that: NEW.
Anything innovative, inventive, and creative was once something nobody had ever done, right?
So, what now?
Not only have we unlocked the mysterious meaning of creativity, but we’ve also established 4 key ways creativity exists in our lives…So, go out and be creative! Whatever that looks like for you, whether you’re painting a portrait, curating a playlist, or batching your content, be encouraged in the fact that YOU. ARE. CREATIVE.
